STERLING- The community of Sterling has a new gathering place.

About 80 people turned out Saturday for the open house for the $1.3-million Sterling Community Center.

Bob Oakes, president of the Sterling Community Club, says the 1,400-square foot center has been over a decade in the making. The club helped build the facility, which includes a gym, game room, locker rooms and a kitchen capable of serving banquets.

Sen. Cathy Giessel, who attended the open house, says the center will bring money to Sterling. She says she expects the gym to be rented for banquets and conferences.

Oakes says the center is selling wall space for businesses to hang banners, which he says will help reduce the echoing in the gym and make the center money.
