Study Faults Justice System for Alaska Natives
A federal study concludes that the safety and justice system for Native Americans in Alaska is the worst in the country.
ANCHORAGE- A federal study concludes that the safety and justice system for Native Americans in Alaska is the worst in the country.
The report by the bipartisan Indian Law & Order Commission says Alaska's centralized, top-down law enforcement and governance neglects huge parts of Alaska.
The report concludes the system has led to Third World conditions and high rates of domestic violence, suicide and alcohol abuse.
The study was ordered by Congress in 2010. The nine-member commission was appointed by the president and Republican and Democratic leaders in the House and Senate.
Alaska Attorney General Michael Geraghty says he agrees Alaska could do more. He says Gov. Parnell has done more than other governors in recent memory to advance public safety in villages.
