JUNEAU- A humpback whale in southeast Alaska is carrying a little extra gear.
The whale is entangled in a gill net, and efforts to free the whale haven't been immediately successful.
The whale was first spotted near Petersburg last week before it moved to the Juneau area.
NOAA Fisheries spokeswoman Julie Speegle says it appears to be a fairly complex entanglement, and officials are proceeding cautiously.
Attempts will be made again this week to free the whale. A buoy has been attached to it for spotting purposes and a tracker has been attached to it.
Speegle says if boaters spot the whale, they should not try to intervene. She says it's best for them and the whale to keep clear.
