Alaska Filipinos Struggle to Contact Family
Filipinos in Alaska's largest city are struggling to make contact with family back home.
ANCHORAGE- Filipinos in Alaska's largest city are struggling to make contact with family back home.
Alaska's Filipino population is just over 19,000 people, according to the 2010 Census, making it the largest Asian group in the state.
Anchorage contractor Vince Fronteras says that communications are still down, leaving some people to get information from news reports and rumor. He hails from the island of Bohol, in the central region of the Philippines that suffered devastation in the typhoon.
He says people there were just getting back on their feet from an earthquake when the typhoon hit.
Fronteras says, "People are in great desperation."
He's been fundraising to help the earthquake victims, and expects several Filipino groups in Anchorage will help raise funds for typhoon relief.
