Coast Guard plans meetings on Arctic operations
The Coast Guard is planning four open house meetings to discuss environmental effects of its 2014 Arctic plans.
The first meeting will be Monday in Nome and will be followed by sessions in Anchorage, Kotzebue and Barrow.
The Coast Guard plans air, water and shore operations. This year's activities will begin in July and last through October.
Shore activities include setting up staging locations that could serve as temporary bases for sea and air support. One is planned for Barrow and others could be staged at Nome, Kotzebue, Port Clarence or Distant Early Warning sites.
In the air, the Coast Guard plans searches for missing vessels or people and routine patrols.
The agency also plans training exercises and community outreach efforts.
