ANCHORAGE- Friday is America Recycles Day, and an event is being planned in Anchorage to encouraging recycling.

Green Star, a conservation group, is joining two elementary schools and the Alaska School Psychologists Association for a Friday auction. Large containers that can store recyclables have been decorated in monster themes by students and adults.
The containers will be auctioned Friday night in the atrium at the ConocoPhillips building. Proceeds will help pay for classroom supplies and benefit nonprofit organizations like Covenant House.
Alaskans for Litter Prevention and Recycling executive director Mary Fisher says nationally about 34 percent of solid waste is recycled. But in Anchorage, that number is only 20 percent, but has been increasing each year.
