Galena Flood Evacuees Leaving Fairbanks Shelter
Galena flood victims who have been staying at a former Fairbanks hotel are working with the state to find new temporary lodging by the end of the month.
FAIRBANKS- Galena flood victims who have been staying at a former Fairbanks hotel are working with the state to find new temporary lodging by the end of the month.
The Willow House, owned by the Tanana Chiefs Conference, became a temporary home for evacuees in May after a major Yukon River flood prompted evacuation of most of the town's roughly 400 residents.
Willow House residents last week learned about the schedule involving the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
Division spokesman Jeremy Zidek says many homes in Galena have not yet been rebuilt. He says the state will be able to cover housing costs for up to 18 months.
He says the goal is to find more permanent housing for winter.
