Galena gets $1.7 for flood prevention measures

A community that was severely damaged in last year's flooding will receive about $1.7 million.

Reports say $1.3 million is from the Federal Emergency Management Association and the remainder is from the state have been set aside for use in Galena.

The money, announced by U.S. Sen. Mark Begich, will be used for flood-prevention improvements, such as elevating homes in the community.

More than 200 homes were damaged or destroyed in last year's flooding, and about 300 residents were evacuated. A federal disaster was declared for the community.

Galena, a community of about 500 people, is located 270 miles west of Fairbanks.
