State fire officials are investigating the cause of a warehouse fire in Unalaska that took 13 hours to extinguish.

Reports say Unalaska firefighters spent most of Wednesday controlling the fire at a warehouse leased by Pacific Stevedoring Inc. from Ounalashka Corp.

The fire was detected at 5:17 a.m. and was a major challenge for the fire department, which has four paid employees, volunteers, two fire engines and one ladder truck.

Fifteen responders worked on the fire and until about 6 p.m.

Fire Chief Abner Hoage says the warehouse was unoccupied. A building 50 feet away contained bunks and was evacuated.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

Unalaska is in the Aleutian Islands about 800 miles southwest of Anchorage.
