KODIAK- Kodiak Island's largest rural community is getting a new store, a year after the old store closed following a series of vandalism and break-ins.
The grand opening of the Nuniaq Food Market in Old Harbor is set to take place on Saturday.
Old Harbor tribal council vice president Melissa Berns says the cost of bringing in goods from the city of Kodiak and elsewhere is expensive and not everybody has the ability to do that.
The store is owned by the Alutiiq (a-LOO'-tick) Tribe of Old Harbor.
A small convenience store already operates in the community of about 200. Tribal officials, however, say the goal is to bring more - and healthier -options to the village.
Old Harbor is 70 miles southwest of Kodiak.
