Kotzebue gets state OK to open city-owned bar
The city of Kotzebue is getting into the bar business.
Reports say the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board on Tuesday approved a liquor license allowing Kotzebue to open a government-owned bar.
The location, a bar and grill, will be the only restaurant allowed to sell alcohol in the northwest Alaska hub community of about 3,300 residents.
Kotzebue voters loosened liquor laws in 2010, paving the way for a city-owned package store to open that year.
Officials said the city has made millions of dollars from the liquor store, allowing Kotzebue to help pay for such things like a boat harbor, playground equipment and a drug and alcohol investigator.
The restaurant is expected to open as early as November. The menu will include burgers, steaks and salad.
