Low Water Affects Boats Near Salcha Bridge Project
Falling water levels are affecting how boaters navigate the Tanana River near Salcha as a new bridge is constructed.
FAIRBANKS- Falling water levels are affecting how boaters navigate the Tanana River near Salcha as a new bridge is constructed.
Boat traffic under bridge construction was closed last week. Alaska Railroad officials said there wasn't enough clearance for boats.
Project director Mark Peterburs says boaters now should be able to cross under the temporary bridge. Clearance Thursday under the north side of the temporary bridge was 8 feet, 2 inches.
The exact clearance will be posted daily at the project website and a sign with flashing lights directs boaters where to go.
Low water also is affecting what was supposed to be the alternative route. Peterburs says water in Boundary Slough has dropped significantly and it's too low to use.
