Mat-Su Borough Assembly votes to store ferry
The Matanuska-Susitna Borough Assembly has voted to indefinitely store its $80 million ferry.
ANCHORAGE- The Matanuska-Susitna Borough Assembly has voted to indefinitely store its $80 million ferry.
The assembly voted Tuesday night to place the ferry into dry dock.
The cost to do so is estimated at $1.1 million.
The $80 million, 195-foot Susitna was a U.S. Navy prototype. The borough received it free by pledging to operate the ferry between the borough and Anchorage. However, the borough concluded that operating the vessel would be too expensive and an Anchorage landing has never completed.
It has cost the borough nearly $1.2 million to dock the ferry near Ketchikan since last year.
Borough manager John Moosey says Cruz Construction Inc. has proposed building a cradle at Port MacKenzie to store the vessel.
