Popular boardwalk shortcut closes in Bethel

A boardwalk that serves as a popular shortcut in Bethel has been closed since May, and its future is uncertain.

Reports say officials closed the boardwalk that connects the Kuskokwim campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks to near the hospital.

Authorities say the wood has deteriorated to the point it's a safety hazard, and the city says there is no plan or budget to repair it right now.

Pete Williams, who was the acting city manager in May, told then city council then that the boardwalk was beyond hope.

The boardwalk will be discussed at a Trails Committee hearing Wednesday night.
