The Sitka Planning Commission wants to learn more about a residential property applicant's federal permit to build near eagle nests before deciding to grant a request for a setback variance.

Reports say Juneau resident Sam Skaggs plans to move to Sitka and has applied for a variance to reduce a side setback from eight feet to three feet. That's where he wants to build his new home on Charteris Street.

The lot is adjacent to a green belt.

Rich Doland, Skaggs' contractor, says his client is aware of the eagle nests and has a federal permit for his project.

Planning commission members, however, said at a meeting Tuesday that they want to take a look at the permit.

The issue will be revisited April 15.
