Wasilla Awaits Final Vote Count on New Library
Supporters of a new Wasilla library are optimistic after the municipal election Tuesday.
ANCHORAGE- Supporters of a new Wasilla library are optimistic after the municipal election Tuesday.
City voters narrowly backed a 1 percent sales tax increase for a new library. The vote was 441-406 but absentee and questioned ballots remain to be counted.
The library is planned for 4.5 acres donated by the Matanuska-Susitna Borough between a middle school and a high school.
It would triple the space of the current Wasilla library and could open as early as 2016 if the vote holds.
Mayor Verne Rupright says most users don't live within city limits and borough residents could help city residents with construction costs through the sales tax.
Jennifer Leash of Annabel's books opposes the project. She says the library shouldn't be funded by people who don't use it.
