South Boys Soccer Earns Top Spot
ANCHORAGE, Alaska--The South High Wolverines boys soccer team has garnered plenty of attention this year, but they've yet to sit atop the Cook Inlet Conference standings.
That all changed on Tuesday evening.
Only three days after posting a 1-0 defeat to Colony High, the Wolverines tallied a goal from Eyob Imlach and Connor Gonzalez.
South High's goal-keeper, Griffin Toomey, notched another shut-out for the Wolverines--as South picks up a 2-0 win.
With the win, South Anchorage High (7-1) moves into sole possession of first place in the Cook Inlet Conference. The team has 21 points, while West Anchorage High (6-1) trails by three points.
FINAL (boys soccer): South Anchorage 2, East Anchorage 0.
As for the girls--the South High Wolverines capped off a sweep of the Thunderbirds with a 1-0 win. The lone goal came late into the second half off the foot of Vanessa Venez.
The Lady Wolverines maintain their spot in the rankings--South is fourth, currently.
FINAL (girls soccer): South Anchorage 1, East Anchorage 0.
The evening feature at the Dome pitted the girls from Chugiak and West Anchorage.
The Lady Mustangs would rely heavily on the stellar performance of Holly Brehmer. Brehmer tallied two goals in the contest.
Brehmer's first came off a Molly Romero pass--after one jab, Brehmer tallied on the top-right corner of the goal for the game's first score.
Going into halftime with a score of 1-0, Chugiak would get more insurance from Brehmer. Midway through the second, Brehmer would play a good lead ball off Hannah Baskin for the game's second score.
Megan Bear would help the Lady Mustangs cause with a late assist off the corner kick. Her shot would be placed for a nice header into the net from Trystan Hall.
FINAL (girls soccer): Chugiak 3, West Anchorage 0.
