The Legacy of Coach Numi

ANCHORAGE, Alaska--Numi Ilalio has decided to resign from his duties after one season as the head football coach of Service High School.

Over the course of his career, Ilalio won two state titles--in 2008 and 2011.

West High School head football coach Tim Davis used to coach on the same sideline as Ilalio. Davis and Ilalio coached at Service High School from 2005 to 2008.

"I can certainly understand why he'd do it," Davis added, "He's left a lasting legacy."

Davis credits Coach Ilalio for bringing the "Spread Offense" to Alaskan football. He said many teams have gone on to impliment the same type of offense.

"Even South (High School) uses it occasionally," Davis mentioned.

While Ilalio has spent much of his life helping student-athletes play the game of football, he's also made an impact overseas. He served our Nation in the military, in Afghanistan.

"It must have been a tremendously difficult time--for him to be away from the game...doing something bigger than the game," Davis said, "He did it so we can play the game.. he did it for our freedom in the United States."
