ANCHORAGE, Alaska--The Alaska Aces announced on Wednesday afternoon an agreement to affiliate with the National Hockey League's Calgary Flames.

This marks the first time since the Aces were dropped by the NHL's St. Louis Blues as being an affiliated member.

The Alaska Aces have had measureable success in the ECHL. Notably, the team has won the "Brabham Cup", an award given to the team with the best record during the regular season, three times in the past three years. Also, Alaska won the Kelly Cup back in 2011.

Along with the Calgary Flames, the Aces are now affiliated with the AHL's Abbotsford Heat.

Affiliating with an NHL team has its advantages. Among those--several Aces players will be allowed to go to the AHL's training camp. It's a symbiotic relationship in that AHL players will occasionally appear in Anchorage on-assignment, while some Aces will be called up to the AHL ranks.
