2012 Great Alaska Shootout Recap
ANCHORAGE, Alaska--The storied history of the Great Alaska Shootout is a tale worth mentioning. Last weekend's conclusion of the 2012 Shootout is just another chapter to add in that book.
Fighting jet-lag and sleep deprivation--many players in this year's tournament still managed to see some of Alaska's scenery.
The women's tournament started on Tuesday with a match between winless teams, Prarie View A&M and Utah State. The Aggies Devyn Christensen, a WAC pre-season Player of the Year candidate nailed a late three-point shot to give Utah State their first win of the season, and a berth in the championship.
After trouncing on the Bison of North Dakota State, the Lady Seawolves had all they could handle in the championship match. The Aggies would win this year's Women's Great Alaska Shootout.
The men's side offered some exciting basketball.
Oral Roberts started the tournament strong with a win over Loyola Marymount. Warren Niles put up 31 points in the contest.
In other first round action, UAA was unable to stop the aggressive Belmont Bruins team, losing 74-60.
In round two, Northeastern would knock off the Bruins by coming back after being down by more than 16 points in the second half. The Huskies nail-biter finish capped off with a 74-71 win, gave the team a chance at the "Gold Pan".
But Northeastern bit off more than they could chew.
The tournament's champion--the Charlotte 49ers--came out of the Great Alaska Shootout as the only team unscathed.
The 49ers picked up wins against Texas State, Oral Roberts and Northeastern.
