South Snaps Dimond's 39-Game Win Streak
ANCHORAGE, Alaska--Ask any prep hockey fan about Wednesday night's contest between the Dimond Lynx and the South High Wolverines, and you'd generally get a one word response.
Indeed it was a big game. Both teams have been nearly untouchable this season. South boasts a goals scored-goals allowed ratio of 63-9; the Lynx, 111 to 11.
The Dimond Lynx got out to an early 1-0 lead on the power-play with a goal from Tyler Andrews.
Later in the first, Kenny Hausinger added a short-handed goal for the Lynx to make it 2-0.
The Wolverines were unable to score a goal until the 2nd period when Cayden Cahill notched a goal to put South within one. Daniel Haider and Jared Cruz both received an assist on the goal.
South tied the game up with 2:12 left in the 2nd period when Cameron Klatt lit the lamp. Trevor Geerin and Steven Orizotti punched it in with the assist.
21 seconds later, the Lynx would strike back with a goal from Tyler Garcia. Andrews was given the assist on the play. He finished the night with a goal and two assists.
From there, it was all South. The Wolverines scored twice late in the third period to put them ahead for good with goals from Orizotti and Tyler Onstott.
Onstott's goal came in the final two minutes to put the Wolverines on top.
Wolverines goalie Nathan Wright had 27 goals in the contest. His counterpart, Jordan MacMillan stopped 21 shots.
With the win, the Dimond Lynx snap their 39 game winning streak dating back to last season. South High remains the only unbeaten team in Cook Inlet Conference play.
