ANCHORAGE - The message police say is simple; don't drink and drive on Anchorage City Streets. Over night APD arrested 9 impaired drivers.

"it was interesting we didn't have our first D-U-I arrest until just after midnight," said APD spokesperson Jennifer Castro.

With the help of a grant from the Alaska Highway Safety office Anchorage police were able to put 10 officers on the streets solely dedicated to D-U-I calls.

APD spokesperson Jennifer Castro did a tweet-along as police made those stops.

Since October volunteers with the Police Citizens Academy Alumni Association have assisted in patrols that have resulted in more than 25 arrests.

In an effort to stop drinking and driving, APD began a photo magnet campaign after the city experienced 5 D-U-I Fatalities.

A tradition Castro hopes will not continue this year.

"we hope this year will be an excellent year for our community and that we will see zero fatalities,"said Castro.

With the increase patrols and enhanced D-U-I detection it's pretty clear the best thing to do is think twice before tossing back a few and grabbing your keys.
