JUNEAU- The first phase of renovation at the Alaska State Capitol is nearing completion.

The main entrance to the building has been closed during the work, which began earlier this year, and a temporary side entrance used. The main entrance should be open by month's end.

Work on the initial phase began after the Legislature ended and had a budget of $1.7 million. It included a seismic retrofit of the building and other renovations.

One of the last things crews will have to do is replace the original granite stairs, which have been kept in storage during construction.
