ANCHORAGE, Ak-- When it comes to giving blood, forensic scientist Robert Shem knows exactly how to lend a helping hand.

"It's my form of community service. It"s something I like to do.  Help the community," Forensic Scientist Robert Shem says.

And like the typical patient, it's not that easy to do.

"I'm not a big fan of needles, so sometimes I get light headed," Shem said.

The Blood Bank of Alaska's limited donors has caused a slight shortage among their collection.
Their hope is to take advantage of this Valentines day by making Alaskans aware to "share their love" by giving the gift of life.

"This is a good time for people to come in and share their love for Alaska and donate,"
Manager of the main Blood bank office in Anchorage TJ says.

Even if you can't get your blood drawn, you can still get your finger poked to figure out what your blood type is. That's what i'm doing in honor of "share your love" month.

Share your love month kicked off the beginning of February.
TJ says it's a great way to educate the public the importance of donating blood.
     Especially during a slight shortage.

"Our current blood type targeted is "A" negative and "O" negative. That's what we are currently targeting," TJ says.

     Robert Shem recognizes the shortage.
     He donates blood frequently.
But it wasn't easy at first.

"So I went and gave blood and when I was done, I sat down to get some cookies and juice. All the sudden my vision started tunneling up," Shem said.

He might have passed out his first time, but soon realized shortly after, the importance of donating.

"Anyway you can help out the Anchorage community is valuable but giving blood is a very easy way to do it," Shem said.

Valentines day might bring a smile to your face, but if you want to really give from the heart, you can donate blood.
