Alaska House passes education bill
The Alaska House has passed a broad-ranging education bill.
The 29-11 vote came around midnight, after hours of floor debate that began late Monday afternoon. HB278 still must be considered by the Senate.
The House voted to remove from the bill a plan for addressing the teachers' retirement system. That provision was added in the House Finance Committee, and Gov. Sean Parnell had called on lawmakers to consider the bill and the pension issue separately.
Representatives, through a floor amendment, also added $30 million in one-time funding for school districts on top of a proposed increase in the per-pupil funding formula known as the base student allocation.
