Recent studies show more than 60 percent of Alaska women have experienced domestic violence or sexual assault. There are groups of Alaska men that are working together to change these sobering statistics. The studies such as the "Alaska Victimization" study were conducted as late as 2010, and highlight the high levels of domestic violence and sexual assault that mark Alaska as the leader in both categories Nationwide. The Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault with support from the Alaska Department of Public Safety and The Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault awarded a number of communities "Alaska Men Choose Respect "grants.

The grants will serve as a catalyst to ignite a number of community projects. In Dillingham a series of posters and activities to promote"Looking For a Few Good Men". Ketchican Women in Safe Homes will lead a young mens group to discuss gender stereo types and healthy relationships.  Aiding Women in Abuse and Rape Emergencies will work with Realtors in a white ribbon campaign to end violence in all forms in Juneau. Standing Together Against Rape will conduct "Operation Green Light" to explore the concept and promote the importance of consent with Anchorage boys and men.

The ultimate goal of the projects are to demonstrate the strong partnerships between the male leaders, community and tribal organizations, and the private sector to strengthen communities and relationships. For more go towww.alaskamenchooserespect.org
