Arsonist Arrested for Midtown Apartment Fire

Woman arrested for felony arson and reckless endangerment

ANCHORAGE - Jenae Collins, was arrested and charged with arson and reckless endangerment for the 24-unit apartment complex, Calais Arms fire on Thursday, Jan. 3.

Collins was a tenant living in the apartment complex. According to court documents, Collins lit an article of clothing on fire and placed it in a trash bin on the balcony before covering it with a cardboard box.

The fire left seven families displaced, three pets dead and sent two people to the hospital.

At her arraignment on Saturday, Collins' bail was set at $200,000 for an appearance bond and a $100,000 performance bond. She was also ordered to have no contact with a key witness in the investigation, only identified as J.M. at this time.

Every unit in the building was damaged in some way, bringing the total cost of damages to approximately 1.3 million dollars, according to the buildings owners.

Court documents showed Collins had two DUI arrests on her record, but nothing as severe as arson prior to this event.
