Birth center delivers baby number 1000
ANCHORAGE - For this Cordova couple, being first time parents is more special then they could ever imagine.
After giving birth early Thursday morning the couple found out baby Teague was actually baby 1000.
"He's number one to us," said mother Katrina Hoffman. "So it's as exciting for us as it was for Geneva Woods probably more so."
The Geneva Woods birthing center is the longest running birth center in the city and staff there says after 12 years reaching 1000 is a big deal.
"There was a lot of laughter in the room," said Hoffman. "We were exclaiming, the midwives were exclaiming I mean you can't not exclaim with all of that hair."
The center is a unique alternative to giving birth in a hospital.
"We do focus more on the holistic side of birth here." said Patricia Young, Certified Nurse mid-wife.
"We see birth and pregnancy as just a normal milestone throughout a woman's life."
Young says the idea of going to a birthing center is just now catching on.
