ANCHORAGE, Ak--yes It's easy to be consumed in your daily routine. But in the blink of an eye, your child could be the next scalding victim.

"it's our time as fire fighters and emergency service workers to remind the public of the dangers of hot objects and potential for burns and to get education awareness out to the public this year," Anchorage Fire Department Fire Chief Jason Dolph says.

The Anchorage Fire Department is reminding Anchorage esidents the first week of February is national burn awareness week. The theme this year is scald burns.

" They can be injured in just one second. A momentary lapse of supervision, all of the sudden, we have an injured child. Very severe injuries. It could be 2nd to 3rd degree burns so we want to prevent those from happening," Dolph says.

Each year, over 500,000 people receive medical treatment for burn related injuries. Most of them are children and elders. Here are a few tips to prevent instances like that from occuring:

Move the pan handle sticking out from the oven to prevent a child from pouring boiling water on themselves.Use dry over mits when touching hot surfaces. And as your child gets older, teach them to cook safely.

" Those are absolutely great tips. our mission in the fire service or with the anchorage fire department is to preserve life and property," Dolph says.

Anchorage fire captain Jason Dolph says burn awareness week is a great way to spread the word.

"Burn awareness week is fantastic. The more awareness we can bring to emergency type problems, the better off we are in the emergency service," Dolph says

Although Captain Dolph is a veteran,  awareness weeks like these not only make him a better firefighter, But as a person too.
