ANCHORAGE -- Friday the Thirteenth morning was not a typical one for the kids in the CSI; Alaska camp.

The summer camp pivoted from the crime scene to where all the action is at the police training center.

Range Master, Officer Jason Penman thinks it's wonderful to teach the young students how to be in the academy, "its so wonderful to be able to see the enthusiasm from the kids as far as takings questions and really sparking their interest in law enforcement and all the things that comes along with that."

Kids took a tour of the facility, and the first stop was in a classroom to learn about firearm safety.

"In Aalaska you know there are a lot of guns, " adds Officer Penman. "We have a strong gun culture here. be able to give them some basic safety is a good thing for all kids whether they have guns in the house or not and how to handle them property."

At the APD Training Center students in the camp are educated on real life experiences.

It teaches kids the misconceptions about the differences between television and reality in law enforcement.

"They see it and they are like 'oh thats the way it has to be' where reality kind of imitates art," said Officer Penman. "It's truly a long ways away from that."

He showed the kids defensive tactics such as taser usage, reality based training, and a stop at the gun range.

They got to see what it's like in real life, and, things aren't as glamorous or exciting as hollywood makes it.

Officer Penman explains, "to be able to give them that ability to give them the glimps of thats how
it really is versus thats how it is in tv is a good thing for them."

But for this hands-on learning experience, they kids ended their tour with a demonstraed flash bang.
