Capturing Alaska: Exploring the Film Tax Incentive Program Pt. 3The film business has seen a growing market in Alaska over the past several years, thanks to film tax credits for feature films, television shows and national commercials. But are Alaskans ready for the challenge? The current film tax incentive program allows production groups to take a 30-percent base credit for filming in the state, and an additional 10-percent when hiring locally. Thanks to the local hire benefit, many Alaskans have seen rapid growth in their film career. Alaska's new film tax incentive program will begin next July. The base rate stays at 30-percent for in-state production, with a boost of 20-percent for local hire, an increase of 6-percent for rural shooting, and a decrease to 5-percent for above-line professionals like directors, writers, and actors. Although tax credits increase for high-paid talent based on the budget for local workers. |
