Chugach Board Encouraged To Expand Fire Island Commitment

Utility looking at phase two

by Mike Ford

Cook Inlet Region Incorporated would like Anchorage's municipal utility to buy power from its wind project on Fire Island.
Chugach Electric has already entered into an agreement with CIRI for phase one of the project.

The board of the utility was greeted Wednesday by an enthusiastic group from the Alaska Center for the Environment , they were on hand to encourage them to invest in phase two. Supporters say it just makes good economic sense. "Some of the prices being considered are actually very competitive with current natural gas prices which would make this project pencil out and make it a big success" stated ACE spokesman Nick Moe.

CIRI anticipates phase two of the project to go online in October of 2015.
