ANCHORAGE---The death of 13-year-old Kake resident, Mackenzie H. Howard is being treated as a homicide, according to officials Thursday (2/7).

Rocking the small southeast Alaska community, Howard was allegedly found yesterday morning, in the entryway of the Kake Memorial Presbyterian Church.

"The community is fairly isolated from the road system," said Rex Leath, Deputy Commander for the Alaska Bureau of Investigations, Major Crimes Section. There was a memorial service the day that we believe this incident occurred, which caused an influx of individuals to come visit the community from the Alaska Marine Highway as well as air travelers."

The victim is en route to Anchorage to undergo an autopsy by the State Medical Examiner Office.

Two evidence collection technicians from the state crime lab are currently on the scene with investigators, according to the Alaska Bureau of Investigations.
