Economists offer differing take on state's outlook
Economists are offering different takes on the state's economic outlook for 2014.
JUNEAU- Economists are offering different takes on the state's economic outlook for 2014.
Marcus Hartley and Greg Wolf spoke at the World Trade Center Alaska's annual economic forecast talk in Juneau this week.
Hartley, a senior economist with Northern Economics, expects an overall slight increase in jobs. The state's economy slowed last year, which Hartley attributed to reductions in state and federal spending and a continued decline in North Slope oil production. He says Alaska's gross state product, which is a measure of total economic output, declined about $2 billion last year. And he predicts a decline of $1.8 billion this year.
Wolf, World Trade Center Alaska's executive director, was more bullish. He expects a comparable amount of exports of goods and services overseas between 2013 and 2014.
