FEMA declares disaster in Alaska areas affected by winter storms
FEMA announced Wednesday that money will head to the Last Frontier to aid those affected in the November storms.
ANCHORAGE- FEMA announced Wednesday that money will head to the Last Frontier to aid those affected in the November storms.
The federal aid will supplement state, tribal, and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by the severe storms, straight line winds, and flooding that happened back from November 5th to the 14th.
This action makes the funding available to state and eligible tribal and local governments as well as certain non profit organizations on a cost sharing basis for emergency work and repair of facilities damaged.
This announcement comes as a big relief to Borough Mayor Luke Hopkins.
"I think it's appropriate the federal government steps in with FEMA funding sources, FEMA assistance, that's what really helps. We are not a Katrina, we are not a Hurricane Sandy response, but when you hit a small community or our residents when the temperatures are 30 below, I appreciate the federal government."
The areas affected included the Bering Strait Regional Education Attendance Area, and Fairbanks North Star Borough.
Where and how to apply for the aid will be available at a later date.
