Fairbanks Transfer Stations to Get Upgrades
The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly has approved $1 million to upgrade and expand the borough's 14 transfer stations.
FAIRBANKS- The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly has approved $1 million to upgrade and expand the borough's 14 transfer stations.
The borough hasn't opened transfer stations since the early 1990s. Meanwhile, the amount of waste has doubled in that time.
Most of the money will be used to upgrade and expand sites next year. Work will begin first on five stations with the heaviest traffic. The exact upgrades and expansions will vary from site to site.
The ordinance, sponsored by Mayor Luke Hopkins, originally called for $4 million to be used on transfer sites. That amount was reduced because the assembly had concerns it wouldn't have proper oversight over the spending.
