A man who escaped custody by stealing a Fairbanks police car has been apprehended.

Reports say Julius "JT" Chambers was arrested with help from federal marshals.

Police contacted Chambers on Tuesday during a criminal trespass call and learned an arrest warrant had been issued for him.

Police say he resisted arrest, and despite being handcuffed, managed to drive off in a police car.

Law enforcement officers traced him Saturday to an eight-unit apartment building in North Pole.

They evacuated other residents from the building and then contacted people inside the apartment where they suspected Chambers was hiding.

Three people initially denied he was inside but then acknowledged he was there and armed.

A police dog found Chambers under a pile of clothes and a futon.
