First Day Studded Tires Are Allowed, North Of Ninilchik
ANCHORAGE, AK - Temperatures are dropping with winter just around the corner. Today marks the first day the state allows studded tires in Alaskan communities, north of Ninilchik.
Officials speculate that drivers have several weeks before road conditions become slick, with no snow in sight and temperatures in the 50's.
Studded tires are not required, but drivers are recommended to at least use winter tires.
Local tire stores say motorists should prepare for slippery roads before the first snowfall, since most shops are packed after the snow hits.
"It's always better to run a new studded tire before you have to put it to use. It gives the stud a chance to seat-in there properly--before you need that traction here when it really comes down," said Johnson's Tire Service Store Manager Thor Anderson.
At 60 degrees latitude, Alaska communities south of Ninilchik will be allowed to use studded tires starting September 30th.
