A flood warning is issued for Mendenhall Lake and river areas in Juneau.
Mendenhall Glacier's 'Suicide Basin' lake began to release over the holiday causing water levels to rise in the area. People are cautioned to stay away from banks of the river during the high water levels and to not stand on bridges to take photos. The Nugget Falls trail is closed and campgrounds further down from Mendenhall Lake campground are closed as well. Boaters should also stay away from the face of the glacier and avoid using the river until further notice. Forest officials say this is the second year flooding in this area has occurred. "Now that they've identified the source they expect it to go at least once a year," said Ed Grossman, USFS Recreations Program Manager. "Maybe several times a year into the future until they can figure out the dynamics of the glacier up there change again." Officials are expecting the flood warning to be lifted in the next couple of days. |
