DENALI NATIONAL PARK AND PRESERVE- A retired Denali State Park ranger and mountaineer is scheduled to recount his winter experiences on Mount McKinley and Mount Foraker. Dave Johnston's free presentation is scheduled for Friday night at Denali National Park and Preserve. The park, in a release, says Johnston made history as part of the expedition that made the first winter ascent of Mount McKinley in 1967. The group faced challenges including high winds and intense snowfall on the way to the summit, and brutal temperatures, calculated at wind-chills of -148 degrees, on the way down. The release says Johnston also made the first ascent on Mount Foraker's Sultana Route in March 1979. It says Johnston, in 2005, became the first person to climb to the highest point in all 50 states during winter.
