ANCHORAGE- A former University of Alaska-Anchorage star is running again after losing both of his feet to frostbite.

Marko Cheseto lined up to run a 6-K in the city Friday night with a big smile and some new gear: carbon-fiber blades where his feet used to be.

The Kenya native was an All-American runner at the school before November 2011, when, despondent over his teammate's suicide, he took an overdose of prescription pills and wandered outside on a cold snowy night.

Two nights later, after a massive search, he woke up and managed to walk to safety, but doctors had to amputate both feet above the ankle.

Cheseto says he ran the race on Friday because he wanted to show the community that he's doing well and that he plans to be around for a long time.
