Fourth Musher Scratches from Iditarod

ANCHORAGE - A fourth musher has scratched from this year's Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, this time because of a lost dog.

Newton Marshall of St. Anne, Jamaica, scratched Thursday afternoon at the Nikolai checkpoint.

Iditarod officials say a dog named Mae became separated from Marshall's team Wednesday while traveling from Rohn to Nikolai. Officials say efforts are being made to locate the dog.

Earlier Thursday, Healy musher David Sawatzky scratched at the McGrath checkpoint, citing concern for his 13-dog dog team.

The race began with 66 teams at a ceremonial start in Anchorage Saturday. The competitive start began Sunday in Willow. Four mushers have scratched.

The 1,000-mile race across the Alaska wilderness will end sometime early next week in the frontier town of Nome, on the western coast.
