Frankenfish and Revenue Sharing Top Priority for Sen. BegichANCHORAGE - Sen. Mark Begich returned to Alaska Friday to give a brief press conference. He addressed issues being debated in Washington including revenue sharing and genetically engineered fish. Currently, gulf states receive a percentage of off shore drilling revenues and Begich says Alaska needs it's fair share. According to the Senator, if Alaska was part of the proposed revenue sharing package, last year, the state would have made nearly a billion dollars. Meanwhile, when it comes to "Frankenfish" or genetically engineered fish, Begich is proposing two bills that would fight the new product. The FDA "doesnt have the ability or capacity to regulate this product," said Sen. Begich. "They have never done anything like this when it comes to literally cloning and that is what we're facing." One of the bills would require the FDA to label the fish. "That's when the consumer will decide if this product will stay in the market," said Sen. Begich. |
