ANCHORAGE- Some lucky Girdwood children experienced something they never had before this weekend.

"It was a new experience. It was pretty fun, a great day to do it," says Ashton, a young Girdwood resident.

For Christmas, local Iditarod musher Nicolas Petit offered free sled rides for children who were interested. In the middle of Meadow Park, Petit chanted out commands and before they knew it, the dogs were off.

"I've been meaning to do this for the past few years," says Petit.

This year, he got his wish, and granted that same wish for the kids.

"Now they get to see the dogs that they follow during the Iditarod and meet them. They are sweet dogs and sweet kids, and they get along."
