Girl, mother take top spots in Sitka Salmon Derby

A girl and her mother have taken the top two winning spots in this year's Sitka Salmon Derby.

Eight-year-old Gemma Diehl won with a 51.4 pound king salmon, followed by her mother Sherry, who caught a 48.4-pound fish.

For her win, Gemma is receiving $7,500. Her mother is getting a new boat and an outboard engine

Reports say the girl wants to go to Disneyland with her prize.

Altogether, 164 people competed in the derby.

A total of 612 fish with an average weight of 15.6 pounds was caught.

The leader of total pounds caught was Kenneth Gray. He caught 15 fish weighing a total of more than 270 pounds.

The Sitka Sportsman's Association's fundraiser brought in nearly 9,553 pounds of king salmon.
