Governor Sean Parnell Signs Legacy Wells LegislationHJR 29 Calls On BLM To Clean Up Their Mess In NPR-A.
The State of Alaska moving closer today in their effort to get the federal government to clean up their Legacy Wells in the National Petroleum Reserve.
Wednesday Governor Sean Parnell signed House Joint Resolution 29, the NPR-A Legacy Wells resoulution. Before signing the bill in his Anchorage office Parnell thanked Rep. Charisse Millett of Anchorage for sponsoring the measure which passed unanimously in both the Alaska House and Senate last session. The Governor stressing that it is time for the Obama Administration to clean up these wells."The Federal Government has done a good job of drilling a hundred thirty seven wells and has done a poor job of plugging those wells and reclaiming the property" HJR 29 urges the Bureau of Land Management to live up to its mission statement and clean up more than a hundred petrolium wells drilled by the government in the NPR-A. Some wells are still leaking natural gas and the sites are covered with trash that is damaging the arctic environment. Representative Millett recently returned from Washington D.C. after testifying about the problem. The Anchorage Republican going before the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee to bring national attenion to the issue. |
