ANCHORAGE- The name of the National Guard soldier who was mauled by a bear over the weekend on JBER has been released.

Sgt. Lucas Wendeborn, 26, was walking through the thick woods on JBER during a land navigation exercise when he encountered a brown bear sow and her two cubs.

Wendeborn was wearing a helmet, safety vest, along with equipment packs which might have prevented his wounds from being deeper when he was  tossed, bit and swatted at by the bear.

Currently Wendeborn  is in stable non threatening life condition, receiving treatment at a hospital on JBER.
