JBER Man Charged in the Death of Fellow Soldier

A 23-year-old soldier stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson is accused of shooting Private First Class Grant W. Wise on Christmas day.

ANCHORAGE - A 23-year-old soldier stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson is accused of shooting Private First Class Grant W. Wise on Christmas day.

Spc. Marshall D. Drake was formally charged Tuesday (1/22) with involuntary manslaughter, negligent homicide and failure to obey general regulations.

A press release sent by JBER officials states Spc. Drake violated Army regulations by wrongfully storing his personally owned firearm and ammunition in his assigned barracks room.

Spc. Drake is an infantryman assigned to the 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division. Originally from Mount Pleasant, S.C., Drake was assigned to JBER in March 2010. He deployed to Afghanistan from December 2011 to October 2012.

The case continues to be under investigation by the Criminal Investigation Division.
