Legislature going long to address education
The House and Senate plan to reconvene later Monday to try to reach resolution on an education package.
The 90-day legislative session was scheduled to end Sunday. But lawmakers continued work past midnight, unable to reach agreement on education. That in turn meant they couldn't wrap up work on the capital budget.
The budget could serve as the vehicle for additional education funding.
The House and Senate took different approaches to funding education, and their omnibus education bills were quite different, too.
The Senate had yet to pass its version of HB278. Once it does, the bill is expected to be sent to conference committee, with the hope that House and Senate negotiators can hammer out a compromise.
