Mat-Su Borough Considers Alcohol Tax
Matanuska-Susitna Borough voters will decide in October whether to approve a 5 percent alcohol tax.
ANCHORAGE- Matanuska-Susitna Borough voters will decide in October whether to approve a 5 percent alcohol tax.
The Mat-Su Assembly in mid-July proposed the tax on alcohol sales in bars, restaurants and liquor stores.
Assembly members acknowledge the tax faces an uphill battle but say it could take in $1 million annually.
A survey conducted this year by the Mat-Su Health Foundation identified alcohol and substance abuse as the municipality's leading health issue.
Bar owner Chris Cox says he opposes the tax and says it was proposed to offset bad borough government spending decisions.
Assemblyman Steve Colligan says voters should consider the measure an offset for property tax and a way to pay for alcohol-related borough expenses such as emergency services.
